Y2K

low-rise, gloss, a future that never came

Y2K is the revival of late-1990s and early-2000s style — low-rise jeans, velour, butterfly clips, metallics, frosted makeup — driven by Gen Z nostalgia and exploding on TikTok around 2021–2022. The name comes from the “Year 2000” computer-bug scare; the look is what optimism about that future used to look like.

Peak Revival 2021–2022
Origin The original era is roughly 1997–2004, carried by pop stars like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Paris Hilton. Gen Z revived it from about 2021, hunting authentic pieces on TikTok, Depop and in thrift stores; by 2022 it was dominant, and luxury houses followed — Blumarine’s SS2022 collection is usually cited as the runway turning point
Platform TikTok, Depop and resale, then runways
Signature Baby tees, baguette bags, platform shoes, tinted sunglasses, butterfly and heart motifs, glossy lips and frosted eyeshadow. Bright, cheap-looking on purpose, tacky as a stance.

“be nice 2 me or be bad 2 me. xoxo”

lowercase text-message cuteness with a heart and a kiss-off; the era’s voice is a flip-phone SMS.

Where it came from

The original era is roughly 1997–2004, carried by pop stars like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Paris Hilton. Gen Z revived it from about 2021, hunting authentic pieces on TikTok, Depop and in thrift stores; by 2022 it was dominant, and luxury houses followed — Blumarine’s SS2022 collection is usually cited as the runway turning point.

The look

Baby tees, baguette bags, platform shoes, tinted sunglasses, butterfly and heart motifs, glossy lips and frosted eyeshadow. Bright, cheap-looking on purpose, tacky as a stance.

The posture

Carefree futurism in retrospect. Y2K romanticises a moment when the future looked shiny and optimistic — a nostalgia, often from people too young to have lived it, for a millennium that never turned out scary. It is play over polish.

How to spot it instantly

Three strokes: something low-rise, something metallic or pastel, and a tiny bag. If it looks like a 2003 music-video still — or a screenshot of a website from the same year — it is Y2K.

Where you see it

Fashion and resale, party and youth brands, anything that wants to feel playful, loud and a little ironic. It is strong with Gen Z audiences and for throwback campaigns, and it pairs easily with brat, which borrowed its rave and Y2K energy.

How to use it well

Pick one or two statement pieces and keep the rest modern, or it becomes a costume. Lean on the textures — velour, jelly, metallic — and the small logos. The easy win is secondhand, which is also the honest version of the trend.

The common mistake

The error is the full costume. Y2K works as two or three borrowed signals against a modern base; head-to-toe low-rise, velour, butterfly clips and a baguette bag reads as fancy dress. The other error is forgetting that the original era was much less welcoming than the highlight reel.

The catch

It is nostalgia for a curated memory, not the real early 2000s, which included the very exclusivity and lack of size and shade range the revival now claims to reject. It also burns hot: peak-Y2K pieces date fast, and the line between “retro” and “fancy dress” is thin.

How it ages

The most durable of the five because it is a revival, not a novelty — it has kept cycling since 2021 and absorbs other trends. But specific pieces (ultra-low-rise, logo belts) mark the year you dressed like them.
